Acne & Acne Scar Treatments

A Personalized, Multi-Technology Approach to Clear Skin

Acne does not affect everyone the same way. Some patients struggle with active breakouts, others are left with scarring and uneven texture long after the breakouts clear.

That is why we do not rely on a single device. Our practice in Modesto uses four complementary Alma laser and light technologies, each suited to a different stage of the acne journey, so your treatment plan can be built around your specific skin.

Active Acne: Calming Breakouts and Preventing New Ones

AFT Acne Handpiece (Alma Harmony XL)

This handpiece uses Alma's Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT) to deliver a targeted blue-light spectrum (420 to 950 nm) that is absorbed by porphyrins, natural compounds produced by P. acnes, the bacteria responsible for inflammatory breakouts. When the light interacts with these porphyrins, it destroys the bacteria without damaging surrounding skin, calming inflammation and helping prevent new lesions from forming.

  • Best for: Moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris, including facial and back acne
  • Sensation: Gentle and non-invasive, and most patients tolerate it comfortably with no numbing required
  • Downtime: None, and a full facial treatment session takes about 15 to 20 minutes
  • Typical protocol: Multiple sessions per week over several weeks, as recommended by your provider

ClearSkin Handpiece (Alma Harmony XL)

ClearSkin was the first technology to combine a non-ablative 1540 nm Er:Glass laser with simultaneous vacuum suction and contact cooling. The laser energy penetrates to the mid-dermis, generating heat that damages overactive sebaceous (oil) glands and disrupts P. acnes bacteria, reducing both breakouts and the oil production that feeds them, all while leaving the surface of the skin intact.

What makes ClearSkin especially useful is that it treats active lesions and improves the appearance of acne scars in the same session, making it a true dual-purpose tool. Note: the handpiece's FDA clearance describes its use broadly as fractional skin resurfacing and coagulation of soft tissue. The specific acne application is how Alma describes and markets the device's clinical use.

  • Best for: Active acne lesions and acne scars, together or separately
  • Sensation: Warming with contact cooling for comfort
  • Downtime: Minimal, and mild redness for a day or two is common
  • Typical protocol: 4 to 6 treatments spaced 1 to 3 weeks apart

Acne Scars and Texture: Rebuilding Smoother Skin

Alma Opus

Once active breakouts are under control, many patients are left with textural changes such as atrophic (indented) scars, enlarged pores, and uneven skin. Alma Opus uses fractional radiofrequency microplasma energy delivered through a range of specialized tips, with Phase Shifter technology allowing your provider to target four distinct depths of tissue, from the deep dermis down to the hypodermis. This controlled injury stimulates the body's own collagen remodeling process to fill in and smooth scarred areas.

  • Best for: Acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, and mild skin laxity
  • Skin type range: Safe across a broad range of skin types, including deeper skin tones. Clinical data shows no post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in patients treated with this microplasma technology, an important consideration for patients prone to dark marks after acne
  • Downtime: Varies by treatment intensity (thermal versus ablative mode), with visible results after one treatment and 2 to 3 sessions typically recommended for optimal results
  • Note: Opus is designed for scarring and texture, not active breakouts. It is typically used once inflammatory acne has been brought under control with AFT Acne or ClearSkin

PixelPeel

PixelPeel is a gentle skin-renewal treatment protocol delivered through Alma's existing Hybrid or Pixel CO2 laser platforms, using Alma's proprietary MotionSync technology rather than being a separate standalone device. It clears away dull, damaged surface skin cells and refines pore appearance in well under five minutes per session, making it an easy add-on for patients looking to improve overall tone and clarity without a lengthy recovery.

  • Best for: Overall skin texture, tone, and pore refinement. Alma's own materials describe it generally for skin renewal rather than specifically for acne scars, so we frame it here as a texture-support option rather than a targeted acne-scar treatment
  • Downtime: Minimal, with treatment taking under 5 minutes and visible improvement after just one session
  • Typical protocol: A series of 3 treatments is recommended for optimal results
  • Note: PixelPeel is a lighter-touch resurfacing option compared to Opus. Your provider can help determine which is the better fit for the depth of your scarring

Finding the Right Plan for You

There is no single technology that is right for every patient. The best approach depends on your skin analysis, acne severity, scarring pattern, and personal goals.

During your consultation at Mantra Health and Wellness in Modesto, your provider will assess your skin and build a personalized plan, which may draw on one of these technologies or combine several in stages, such as calming active breakouts first before moving into scar and texture focused treatment. Your plan will be tailored specifically to you, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What to Expect Before You Begin

During your consultation, we will review your skin type (Fitzpatrick classification), current acne severity, medication history, and scarring pattern to determine the safest and most effective combination of treatments.

A few things that may affect your candidacy or timing:

  • Recent or current use of isotretinoin, which typically requires a waiting period before laser treatment
  • Active skin infections, open wounds, or uncontrolled inflammatory skin disease
  • Recent sun exposure or tanning
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of keloid scarring
